What is Sound Therapy?

Sound therapy is a relaxation modality that uses sounds, vibrations and frequencies to enhance a person’s physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. It incorporates the use of various instruments such as Tibetan Singing bowls, tuning forks, crystal bowls and gongs to help move the body into a deep, meditative state.  The vibrations from sound  help  clear the body of stuck energy, allowing the opening of chakras, the flow of energy and encouraging the body back into alignment.  Sound also helps activate the natural healing powers of the body and allows the body to rest in the space of deep relaxation. Just like meditation, sound therapy allows you to quiet the mind and connect to that space between thoughts. In that space, there is restoration.

How does Sound Therapy work?

In our everyday, doing-life-the- very- best-we-can, our brain waves operate  in beta waves. This is the critical thinking, problem-solving, active  state.  During Sound Therapy, sounds, vibrations and frequencies allow these active brainwaves to move into alpha (resting state of the brain) and theta (lucid dreaming).  Essentially moving from a doing state to a resting state.  When the body is relaxed, the parasympathetic nervous system is activated. The  parasympathetic nervous system plays a vital role in maintaining both physical and mental health  by helping the body to calm down from stress reactions, slow down certain responses and bring about a state of calm to the body, allowing it to relax, rest, and repair itself. When the parasympathetic nervous system is turned “ON” the responses  include decreased heart rate, constriction of bronchial tubes in lungs, an increase of digestive enzymes, and more relaxed muscles. When the  body is overrun by stress and anxiety, these functions cease to  work efficiently causing the body to live in a fight or flight response.
